Environmental Education

Public Speaking at Schools

We take requests from schools and teach children about environmental protection We use several methods of presenting children with information, including slide shows, plays, and group discussions. We feel that environmental education is the most important focal point to our agenda. By teaching kids the importance of protecting our environment, we are helping future leaders to make wiser decisions when it comes to policies that affect our earth.

Okinawa Junior O.C.E.A.N. Ranger Program

Education

The Okinawa Junior O.C.E.A.N. Ranger program is designed to let children discover the beauty and mysteries of Okinawa's marine world through hands-on activities.

Some of the hands-on activities that children participate in during our 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day programs:
  • Snorkeling
  • reef checks
  • water testing
  • Marine-debris Data Collection
  • Search and Discovery games
Environmental Education Children have the benefit of being taught by instructors who have experience working with kids, as well as a love for the ocean. The ocean becomes the classroom, and O.C.E.A.N. instructors facilitate discussions about what the students have observed and learned. Students then get the chance to propose their own solutions to local marine-related environmental problems that range from stopping soil erosion to protecting sea turtle nesting sites. They also learn about the connection between the ocean and Okinawan culture, with emphasis on local traditions in conjunction with specific areas. By the completion of the course, each participant not only has a better understanding of the marine environment, but they also gain a sense of pride about their own island, giving them the necessary tools to become future environmental activists.

Island Connections Program

The main goal of the Island Connections Program is to promote leadership and to teach children the importance of the phrase "think globally, act locally." By teaching kids the similarities between their own island and other island communities, children begin to get a sense of how the sea connects us. The program lets children see first-hand the effects of pollution and marine habitat destruction on an international scale, while observing what methods of marine conservation can be adapted and taught from one island to another. By learning about marine life and marine conservation together with other students from around the world, children will also gain experience in how to overcome barriers in order to work together towards one common goal.

(The Island Connections Program is currently in the planning stages. Our first program is being planned for 2004 and will involve students from Okinawa and Hawaii. Other future island sites include the Canary Islands, Galapagos Islands, and Cuba. Anyone interested in supporting this program, please contact O.C.E.A.N. via email: edo@okinawaocean.org)

Beach Cleanups and other Special Educational Projects

During the "I Love Okinawa Campaign" two to three cleanups a year are specifically planned for children. These cleanups include reef trail tours, sea kayaking, and ocean safety classes. These activities enable children to enjoy clean and safe beaches after having made the effort to rid the coastline of marine debris. In the future, we will be creating and activity-based learning guide with games to be used by schools and parents.

My Ocean Charter

The "My Ocean Charter" was a tool used to promote marine conservation during the "Year of the Ocean" in 1998. Local artist Naka Bokunen created a special wood-block print design for the "Okinawa My Ocean Charter," which we still use today. The charter is a personal promise to do one's best to protect the sea. We use the charter at school functions and other events to give to children.

Programs for High School Educators "Jr. OCEAN Ranger Program."

Our intern, Carolyn, put together a very good program for H.S. students and College students for the Junior O.C.E.A.N. Ranger program. Please have a look here. Programs for High School Educators "Jr. OCEAN Ranger Program."
